One of the most common questions travellers ask before visiting Curaçao is: Do I really need to rent a car?
The honest answer is: not everyone needs a car for their entire holiday, but for most visitors, having one makes exploring Curaçao much easier and more enjoyable.
Whether you need a rental car depends on where you are staying, what you would like to see and how much freedom you want during your holiday.
How big is Curaçao?
Curaçao is not a very large island, but distances are often greater than visitors expect. Willemstad, Jan Thiel, Mambo Beach, Westpunt and the island’s nature parks are spread across different areas.
Many of Curaçao’s most beautiful beaches, including Grote Knip, Playa Lagun, Playa Kalki and Playa Piskadó, are located on the western side of the island. From Willemstad, Jan Thiel or Mambo Beach, driving there can take between 45 minutes and just over an hour.
If you plan to stay mainly at your hotel or resort, you may be able to manage without a car. However, if you want to visit several beaches, restaurants, neighbourhoods and attractions, a rental car gives you much more freedom.
Is there public transportation in Curaçao?
Yes, Curaçao has public transportation. There are two main types of buses:
- Large public buses, locally known as konvoi.
- Smaller, privately operated vans, usually recognisable by the word BUS on their licence plate.
Most routes start or finish at the busterminals in Punda and Otrobanda. From there, buses travel to different neighbourhoods and parts of the island.

The smaller vans are more flexible and usually travel along a set route without following a strict published timetable. Their destination is generally displayed in the front window. Passengers can often flag them down along the route and ask the driver where they would like to get off.
Public transportation is inexpensive and can be an interesting way to experience everyday life on the island. For shorter journeys, especially between residential areas and Willemstad, it can be a perfectly reasonable option.
However, there are some limitations. Buses do not reach every beach, accommodation or tourist attraction. Travel can take longer, transfers may be necessary and departure times may not always fit your plans.
For a full day of visiting several beaches, public transportation is therefore less convenient.
Can you explore Curaçao on foot?
Some parts of Willemstad are perfect for walking. Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai and Scharloo are located relatively close together and are best explored on foot.
Outside the city centre, walking is less practical. Distances can be considerable, pavements are not available everywhere and the midday heat can be intense.
Cycling is possible, but it is not the easiest form of daily transportation for most visitors. Curaçao has relatively few dedicated cycling paths, and drivers are not always accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists.
What about taxis and Uber in Curaçao?
Taxis are available at the airport, hotels and popular tourist locations. They are convenient for airport transfers, restaurant visits or evenings when you prefer not to drive.
Most taxis do not use a meter, so always ask for the fare before starting your journey.
Curaçao currently does not have ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft. If you need several taxi rides each day, the costs can quickly add up. In that situation, renting a small car may be more economical.
When might you not need a rental car?
You may be able to enjoy your stay without renting a car if:
- You are staying at a resort and plan to spend most of your time there.
- Your accommodation is within walking distance of restaurants and a beach.
- Your hotel provides a shuttle service.
- You intend to book organised tours and excursions.
- You are only staying in Curaçao for a few days.
- You do not mind using taxis occasionally.
- You are comfortable planning your journeys around bus routes and schedules.
In these situations, you could also rent a car for just one or two days to explore the rest of the island.
When is renting a car recommended?
A rental car is particularly useful if:
- You want to visit several beaches on the western side of Curaçao.
- You plan to hike in Christoffel National Park.

With your own car, you do not have to organise your day around bus schedules, excursion times or taxi availability. You can stop at a viewpoint, discover a local restaurant or spontaneously decide to visit another beach.
Is driving in Curaçao difficult?
Driving in Curaçao is manageable for most visitors. Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road, and the main roads are generally easy to navigate.
There are a few things to keep in mind. Some roads have potholes, signs are not always clear and traffic around Willemstad can be busy during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Using a navigation app can make travelling around the island easier.
Parking is usually straightforward outside the city centre. In parts of Willemstad, you may need to use paid parking or park a little farther away and continue on foot.
A large SUV or four-wheel-drive vehicle is generally unnecessary for an ordinary holiday. A compact car is suitable for reaching the main beaches, restaurants and attractions. It is also easier to park and usually more economical.
Should you rent a car for your entire holiday?
You do not automatically need to rent a car for your complete stay.
For example, if you are visiting Curaçao for ten days and mainly want to relax by the pool or at a nearby beach, renting a car for three or four days may be enough. You can use those days to visit Willemstad, Westpunt and the nature parks.
If you want to explore a different part of the island every day, shop for groceries and visit restaurants in the evenings, keeping a car for your entire stay will probably be more comfortable. It may also be less expensive than paying for multiple taxi journeys.

Strictly speaking, no. You can travel by bus, taxi, hotel transfer or organised excursion.
For most travellers, however, a rental car is the easiest way to properly explore Curaçao. The beaches and attractions outside Willemstad are much easier to reach when you have your own transportation.
